(HomeGarden247.com, November 10, 2012 ) Matthews, NC- Last week, Sandy pounded the northeastern coastline, with the Jersey Shore being one of the hardest hit communities.
Residents alike were kept indoors for hours in hand. Many of them complained of claustrophobia and cabin fever, as one man said that he was going “stir crazy.” In order to pass time, as well as to comfort each other through the storm, many Jersey shore residents decided to break the storm’s monotony on Sunday by taking to drinking and socializing from a cozy bar stool.
On Monday night at 8:15 p.m., Sandy knocked out much of Jersey Shore’s electric power. One resident, Paulette Balla, had been forced to sit at home in Asbury Park in complete darkness.
She wore “a hoodie, a sweatshirt, a pair of gloves,” and swaddled in two blankets to stay warm. The only time Balla went out of her home before Sunday was to hunt for gasoline. But as she sat at the crowded and friendly bar at Clancy's Tavern in Neptune City, she found herself enjoying the heated room and the glow on her friends' faces.
Seemingly, the hardships that Sandy had forced on her disappeared.
"This is like heaven," said Balla, who is 60. "It is great to be out. I felt claustrophobic at home." Balla stated that the inability to fire up the furnace as the nights grew colder last week was very difficult. She said, “I have been using hot tap water for my tea. It didn't really make it,” she said.
People along the East Coast, including, New Jersey have had to face unaccustomed disruptions and inconveniences, with little to no hot food, showers, cable TV, electricity and Internet.
Steve, 59, of Avon, stated that he loves his mother-in-law "dearly." The 87-year-old woman had recently moved into a nearby apartment, but when Sandy knocked out her heat, he and his wife took her in and sat her in front of the fireplace in their living room. McLaughlin said he sat at the bar at Darcy's Tavern in Bradley Beach, watching the television. “I've had no TV, Internet and heat. I have experienced cabin fever with my mother in law in the cabin.” After a pause he y continued, kindly: "But I do love her dearly.”
McLaughlin said that he took his first "leisure trip" out on Sunday. He was enjoying watching football games, having a few beers and having conversations with others in the bar. "Everyone here is having a very good time,” he stated.
Bar Anticipation in Lake Como was among the most popular bars on the Jersey Shore due to its big name bands, multiple televisions, and lively crowds - especially on Sundays during football season when there is a free buffet. Johnnie B., the manager of Bar Anticipation these past 12 years, stated that he had never seen the kind of appreciation pouring into the bar before Sandy.
He said, “A mother and daughter came up to me and said 'Thank you, thank you,' because they hadn't eaten in two days . . . One friend had been stuck in his second floor because of the floodwater, and when he got here today, he ate and ate."
Bar Anticipation is not a typical bar buffet of burgers, but it also serves hot dogs and cold fries. Instead, a line of tables leading to the bar's entrance were laden with a huge bowl of king crab legs, and there were platters of barbecued chicken, hero sandwiches, pasta, guacamole and salads served up by four people. Inside, the place was packed.
The manager said, "I made sure we had more today because I knew we'd have a bigger crowd. . . People told me they have been going stir crazy. They need to mingle, watch the game and enjoy a drink."
The bar, which has its own generator, has been open every night since Sandy blew through the Jersey Show. The manager said, "People came here despite the storm this week. . .Here there is a sense of normalcy. If we were closed, they would think things were really bad."
